Support in Australia for Kuwaiti students

Kuwaiti students in Australia have three main sources of help: the Kuwait Cultural Office, the Embassy of Kuwait in Canberra, and the support services at their own university or college.

Kuwaiti students in Australia have three main sources of help: the Kuwait Cultural Office, the Embassy of Kuwait in Canberra, and the support services at their own university or college. This guide explains what each one does and how to reach them. The contact details below were checked on official pages on 3 October 2026.

In an emergency, call 000

  • Triple Zero (000) is Australia's emergency number for police, fire and ambulance. Use it when life is in danger or the situation is urgent.
  • On a mobile you can also dial 112, which connects to the same Triple Zero service.
  • Call 000 first, then contact the Embassy or your sponsor once you are safe.

The Kuwait Cultural Office (KCO)

The Kuwait Cultural Office in Australia and New Zealand looks after Kuwaiti sponsored students in both countries. The Australian Government's list of foreign missions places it under the Embassy of Kuwait.

  • Address: 16 Bulwarra Close, O'Malley, ACT 2606 (Canberra)
  • Phone: (02) 6286 1166
  • Email: info@kuwaitculture.org.au, or newstu@kuwaitculture.org.au for new students' arrival documents
  • Hours: 9 am to 3 pm, as listed on the KCO website

The office's sections include academic guidance, certification and academic accreditation, and accounts. KCO's website lists several sponsoring bodies, including the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), PAAET, Kuwait University, the Civil Service Commission and KISR.

What KCO asks of new scholarship students:

  • Arrive no more than two weeks before your studies start, and go straight to your study city. You do not need to visit the Canberra office.
  • To start your monthly allowance, upload or email: a passport copy (from the Sahel app), your boarding pass or entry stamp, an official printed bank letter with your full name and account number, the Student Information Form, a visa copy, and a VEVO record as proof that you are in Australia.
  • Students under 18 must either travel with a companion (father, mother, brother or sister aged at least 21) or stay in homestay from the homestay start date.
  • Health insurance: MoHE provides health insurance for scholarship students (Decision 197/2025, Article 29). KCO's health insurance page tells students to download the nib app on arrival to activate their policy.

Self-funded students should ask KCO which of these steps apply to them.

The Embassy of Kuwait in Canberra

The Embassy handles consular matters, including police clearances and visas.

  • Address: 5 Callemonda Rise, O'Malley, ACT 2606
  • Phone: +61 2 6286 7777
  • Hours: Monday to Friday, 10:30 am to 2:30 pm

These details come from the Australian Government's official list of foreign embassies.

Out-of-hours emergencies: KCO's home page lists an Embassy emergency number, (+61) 04 5555-9099. It is for use outside official hours, on public holidays and at weekends. It is for emergencies only, not academic matters. KCO lists a separate emergency number for the Embassy in New Zealand.

Ongoing supervision of scholarship students

If you are on a MoHE scholarship, KCO keeps track of your studies throughout your degree. The rules are in Ministerial Decision 197/2025, which KCO publishes. Under Article 4, you must:

  • stay in regular contact with MoHE and KCO;
  • tell KCO before you leave Australia during your study period, with your institution's approval;
  • give KCO your study plan at the start, proof of enrolment each semester, and your official results each semester or year;
  • explain any academic warning to KCO within one month;
  • keep your contact details up to date.

KCO also requires you to study full time, be in Australia during regular semesters, and give proof of presence every semester.

  • Leave (Article 23): with MoHE approval and a medical report, you can take sick leave of up to one semester across your whole degree. The article also covers maternity leave and bereavement leave.
  • Penalties (Article 24): a disciplinary warning, stopping the monthly allowance, freezing the scholarship, or dismissal.

Support on campus and in your city

Australian education providers have dedicated student support staff. According to Study Australia, services commonly include:

  • welcome and orientation programs;
  • academic and student support advisers;
  • language and learning support;
  • mental health, wellbeing and counselling services;
  • careers services;
  • prayer and worship rooms;
  • accommodation and housing services.

Check your provider's website for what it offers. Each state and territory also runs free services for international students, such as support officers, counselling, legal advice and social events.

If you are struggling, talk to a counsellor at your place of study or to a GP. You can also call Lifeline on 13 11 14, which offers 24/7 crisis support.

One visa rule to remember: you must tell your provider your residential address within 7 days of arriving in Australia.
